Aristotle’s Science of Economics
Abstract
In this chapter the Aristotelian conception of the economic science will be explained.
First, the notion of oikonomike will be introduced. Then, it will be determined whether
Economics was a science for Aristotle. In the third place, it will be analyzed what kind
of science, within Aristotle’s classification, Economics is. The characteristics of
practical sciences will then be displayed. Finally, the consequences of Economics being
a practical science for Aristotle will be deduced. The present study both relies on
Aristotle’s textual analysis and interpretation of his thought in a sort of translation of his
teachings to today language and application of them to today Economics.
