Introduction: burnout syndrome is an emotional ill- ness caused by physical or mental overload and ex- cessive stress in the work setting. This in turn affects clinical competence during patient care. The purpose of this investigation was to explore the association be- tween the level of exhaustion and the clinical compe- tence of the nursing professional in a neonatal inten- sive care unit (NICU) of Puerto Rico. Population and methods: descriptive correlational design. Participants were nurses working in a neonatal intensive care unit. The Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey and the Six-Dimension Scale of Nursing Performance were used. Results: 37 nurses were included. The emotional exhaustion and depersonalization scales were high in 51.3%and56.8%oftherespondents,respectively;43.2 %showedlowpersonalachievement.Intermsofclinical competence, only 8 of the participants completed this section. A statistically significant association was found between depersonalization and the leadership component (p = 0.02) and between personal achievement and the critical situations component (p = 0.02). Conclusions: the presence of at least one dimension of the burnout syndrome was observed in 64.9 % of the nurses surveyed.en_US
