Acquired or congenital intestinal failure in the neonatal period, is one of the most important causes that lead pediatric patients to intestinal transplantation. Hirschsprung’s disease, gastroschisis and necrotizing enterocolitis are causes of short bowel syndrome (SBS) and intestinal failure. For decades, these patients had no alternative treatment in Argentina. However, since 2006, the intestine transplant is a possible option. This offers an improvement in the quality of life for the newborn. This review aims to communicate treatment and nursing care strategies for these patients and thus achieve autonomy and well-being for the child and his family, who in the past could only grow under the parenteral nutrition regimen. This article also deals with the experience of 10 years in the care of neonates with SBS in the Hospital Universitario Fundación Favaloro.en_US
